Hamburg survived a scare in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Monday night as they defeated Fortuna Dusseldorf in a penalty shoot-out following a 3-3 draw.
Mladen Petric put Hamburg ahead after five minutes, however second-tier Fortuna were level seven minutes later when Oliver Fink scored, and an own goal from Jerome Boateng in the 16th minute gave the visitors a shock lead.
Piotr Trochowski equalised with a fierce 20-yard shot in the 55th minute, and put Hamburg ahead five minutes into extra-time, with a spot-kick which looked like being a match-winner.
Yet in the 120th minute Fortuna found an equaliser through Andreas Lambertz, forcing penalty kicks.
Top-flight Bundesliga class told in the shoot-out though, which Hamburg won 4-1 as Marcell Jansen converted the winning kick.
